چکیده

Motivated by recent experiments on current induced step bunching on Si(111) surfaces, we study a generalized 2D Barton-Cabrera-Franck model, where adatoms have a diffusion bias parallel to the step edges and there is an attachment barrier at the step edge. We find a new linear instability with novel step patterns. Monte Carlo simulations on a solid-on-solid model are used to study the instability beyond the linear regime. [S0031-9007(98)07177-4]

Instability and wavelength selection during step flow growth of metal surfaces vicinal to fcc(001).

We study the onset and development of ledge instabilities during growth of vicinal metal surfaces using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. We observe the formation of periodic patterns at [110] close packed step edges on surfaces vicinal to fcc(001) under realistic molecular beam epitaxy conditions. The corresponding wavelength and its temperature dependence are studied in detail. Simulations sug...

Instabilities of Vicinal Silicon ( 111 ) Surfaces

The morphological instabilities of vicinal Si(111) due to a DC electric current and due to the 7 x 7 reconstruction are studied using a variety of diffraction and imaging techniques. The current induced instabilities which occur at sublimation temperatures or under conditions of step-flow produce morphological features on length scales appropriate for optical studies, 5 50,u. All-electron first-principles investigations of the energetics of vicinal Cu surfaces

Using first-principles calculations we studied the energetics surface energy, step energy, stability with respect to faceting of the lowand high-Miller-index vicinal Cu surfaces, namely, the 111 , 100 , 110 , 311 , 331 , 210 , 211 , 511 , 221 , 711 , 320 , 553 , 410 , 911 , and 332 surfaces. Our calculations are based on density-functional theory employing the all-electron full-potential linear...

Misfit elastic energy and a continuum model for epitaxial growth with elasticity on vicinal surfaces

In heteroepitaxial growth, the mismatch between the lattice constants in the film and the substrate causes misfit strain in the film, making a flat surface unstable to small perturbations. This morphological instability is called Asaro-Tiller-Grinfeld ~ATG! instability. In practice, most devices are fabricated on vicinal surfaces which consist of steps and terraces. In this case, the misfit str...

Peculiar effects of anisotropic diffusion on dynamics of vicinal surfaces.

We report on peculiar behaviors due to anisotropic terrace diffusion on step meandering on a vicinal surface. We find that anisotropy triggers tilted ripples. In addition, if the fast diffusion direction is perpendicular to the steps, the instability is moderate and coarsening is absent, while in the opposite case the instability is promoted, and interrupted coarsening may be observed. Strong e...
